Setup Java, Git, and an IDE
Note: If you're somewhat familiar with coding and have installed an IDE before, try working on some of the more challenging beginner tasks - like "Set up a local workspace and run Terasology from source" - for bonus points!
To contribute code to Terasology, you'll need to write code in the Java programming language using an IDE like IntelliJ or Eclipse and push it to our repository using the Git version control system. This task will help you get started with all three of these!
Definition of 'Done'
- You've installed the latest version of JDK 8 (submit us a screenshot of the output of the
java -version
command invoked in the console/terminal) - You've installed Git or a graphical Git client (submit a screenshot either of the opened client or the output of the command
git --version
) - You've successfully downloaded and installed an IDE (submit a screenshot of the program)
Where to start?
- Download JDK on the Oracle website.
- Download Git on the official website, or use one of the graphical clients.
- There are many IDEs that allow you to code in Java. The recommended IDE for Terasology development is JetBrains IntelliJ Idea which has a free Community Edition available!
