Plasma is Desktop Environment by the KDE. Plasmoids are the important part of Plasma desktop Environment. Plasmoid or in other words applets/widgets are used to provide system information or various controls for system. Some example of plasmoids are Application Launcher, Battery monitor, Digital Clock etc.
